20 Myths That Are Scientifically Proven Wrong.

Myths are basically traditional stories consisting of events that are historical and in most cases supernatural. The word myth is derived from Greek language and it means story. We have all heard a number of myths from our elders since our childhood and as we grow up we tend to think that these myths are truly accurate . However over the time many of these myths have been scientifically proven wrong. Where most myths are based on a specific culture and heritage , there are a number of myths which are common and believed worldwide.In this article I have discussed a few of those myths that science has rejected on the basis of research and experiment.

  1. We have always heard and believed that coffee is made from beans however it is actually made from a seed.
  2. People always say that chameleons change colour to match their surroundings but recently it has been found that they change as a response to mood, temperature, communication and light and not the object they are touching.
  3. We have grown up believing that the Mount Everest is the tallest mountain in the world but the truth is that the top of Mount Everest is higher above sea level than the summit of any other mountain, but Mauna Kea in Hawaii is the tallest when measured from base to summit.
  4. People all over the world believed that the Great Wall of China can be seen from space however the Apollo astronauts confirmed that you can’t see the Great Wall of China from the moon.
  5.  We have always read in our science books that the earth revolves around the Sun. Technically, what is going on is that the Earth, Sun and all the planets are orbiting around the center of mass of the solar system.
  6.  Peanuts are not a type of nuts rather they belong to the plant family, Leguminosae.
  7.  elders always say that giving children sugar makes them hyper but most researches have concluded that sugar does not cause hyperactivity.
  8.  It has always been thought that humans have five senses however it turns out there are at least nine senses and most researchers think there are more like 21.
  9. Everyone thought that the Fortune cookies are a Chinese tradition but the truth is that they were invented in the US.
  10.  People around the world believed that Sushi means “raw fish” although it actually means sour-tasting.                                                                                                                                                                                
  11. Elders in the family have always been telling us that Vitamin C is an effective treatment for a cold. Recently experts have declared that there is little or no evidence that it helps.
  12.  Since years it has been believed that bats are blind , but now it has been found that despite tiny eyes and a nocturnal lifestyle none of the bat species is blind.
  13. One of the most strongly believed myth is that handling a baby bird will make its mother reject it. Scientists have recently discovered that most birds have a very poor sense of smell, so in most cases wouldn’t even notice.
  14. There has been a misconception that you need to wait 24 hours before reporting a missing person to the police. However the reality is that no such rule exists.
  15. One fact that we have all known about bulls is that bulls are enraged by the colour red. You all will be shocked to know that actually bulls only see in blues and yellows and they react only to the movement of the red cape flapped by the matador.
  16. We all have always believed that microwave radiation can cause cancer, but now most experts say that microwave ovens don’t give off enough energy to damage DNA in cells so they can’t cause cancer.
  17.  One of the most common myth is that people believe the capital of Australia is Sydney however it’s Canberra.
  18. Its hard to believe that tomatoes are not vegetable rather they are a fruit.
  19. Around the world people believe that alcohol keeps you warm. The reality actually is that a drink or two causes your blood vessels to dilate, moving warm blood closer to the surface of your skin and making you feel warmer temporarily.
  20. People always say that waking sleepwalkers harms them however it has been proved that this is not true.
