After spending several months with the iPhone XS and the larger iPhone XS Max, it is clear that the latest Apple phones not only add some additional letters to the iPhone X. In fact, the iPhone XS Max is our best mobile phone.
Although the XS retains the look of the original iPhone X, many other features have undergone significant changes. From the screen to the processor and cameras, Apple has made important adjustments so that the latest iPhone X models stand out from the previous version.
WHAT’S NEW IN THE IPHONE XS?
The form factor may not change compared to the separate design of the iPhone X 2017, but there are some differences with respect to the new phone, especially under the hood.
Processor: every year, a new processor integrates the latest iPhone. In the case of the iPhone XS, it is the Apple Aiono Bionic processor. This is undoubtedly the biggest improvement for the iPhone XS, as it brings many more changes from Apple, including improvements to the camera. The A12 is the first 7-nanometer chip that is commercialized. (Qualcomm’s 7-nanometer chipset, the Snapdragon 855, is now available on the best Android phones, including the Galaxy S10, but not as fast as the A12). Apple’s small processor allows for more efficient performance.
Of course, the A12 offers the performance improvement required over its predecessor. The two high-performance cores of the A12 are 15% faster and consume 40% less energy than the A11, while the four new processor efficiency cores are 50% more efficient than the A11 of the last year of the iPhone X. The A12 graphics processor is also 50% faster.
I saw an improvement in performance when I tested the iPhone XS. The new phone surpasses Geek bench 4 on iPhone X by 11%, while improving its benchmark performance of 3DMark Slingshot Extreme by 3%. The iPhone XS also converted a 2-minute 4K clip into 1080p in 39 seconds, surpassing the 43-second iPhone X. They are solid gains, although the A11 was not the big leap forward. In comparison with the A10.
But the A12 offers other notable changes. On the A12, there is an 8-core neuronal engine, which is 9 times faster. It supports tasks such as machine learning and can handle up to 5,000 billion operations per second. The result is more immersive and realistic AR experiences.
Faster Modems: not only the processor has been improved. The new iPhones have a new modem that supports Gigabit LTE. Schiller offers the fastest LTE connectivity of all iPhones to date. The evidence supports this claim, since the iPhone XS offers higher download and download speeds in the AT & T, T-Mobile and Verizon tests performed by SpeedSmart.net. But, the size of the sensor on the iPhone XS and XS Max has gone from 1.2 to 1.4 microns, and the pixels are also deeper. The result is an improvement in the light capture capacity of 50%.
With Smart HDR, your iPhone can take several photos to obtain a balanced shot in a very short time. The iPhone XS can record more photos in less time, reducing the shutter speed to the point of not being noticed. According to Apple, the sensor of the main rear camera is larger, which should help give more light to the iPhone XS, even in darker environments. Water Resistance and Durability: iPhone X has an IP67 water and dust resistance rating, which means you can leave it in about 3 feet of water for 30 minutes without damaging your phone. The XS is a bit more durable with IP68 protection. Now, the new model survives by swimming in approximately 6 feet of water, and Apple also says it can withstand the splashes of all kinds of sticky materials such as soft drinks and beer.
Apple also claims that the iPhone XS and XS Max have the most durable crystal of a smartphone. In our own tests, the iPhone XS and XS Max have effortlessly kept the falls on the edges, hidden and in the back, from 3 meters to 5 feet. Both phones even survived the 11-foot falls. Independent crash tests also suggest that new iPhones can survive occasionally (although you still want to invest in a protective case).
Battery Life: Apple often worries about the size of its cell phone battery and the tradition of “who asks?” Continue with the iPhone XS. The IFixit disassembly indicates that the battery of the iPhone XS has a capacity of 2659 mAh. It would be smaller than the 2,716 mAh battery last year, which, according to iFixit, means it’s a poIr supply of 3,179 mAh.
Perhaps these sizes explain the result of our battery test. The iPhone XS lasted 9 hours, or 41 minutes, when you constantly browse through LTE. It’s about an hour less than 10:49 am when I tested the original iPhone X when it was launched last year.
Storage Capacity: the last year of iPhone X was completed with 256 GB. Since Apple does not have a microSD slot in phones, it is the upper limit of its memory. There is not yet a microSD slot on the iPhone X, but Apple has increased its capacity. The basic model of the XS system starts with the same 64GB storage space. However, you can choose betIen the 256GB and 512GB models if you are ready for additional storage.
