Today when a movie is released based on a book, that particular book usually makes it to number 1 in New York Times or Bestseller and has already been in the hype for a period of time. But bet you didn’t know these 10 popular movies that seemed original, however,  were actually based off a book which initiated its release as a movie.

1. Jaws

The novel Jaws was written by an American writer, Peter Benchley and was published in 1974. It tells the story of a great white shark that preys upon a small resort town and the voyage of three men trying to kill it. The movie was released a year later the book was published.

2. Pitch perfect

This movie was based on the nonfiction book Pitch Perfect- The Quest for Collegiate A Capella Glory which was written by Senior Editor at GQ Mickey Rapkin

3. Jurassic Park

The book Jurassic park written by no.1 bestseller Michael Crichton sold more than 3 million copies in print! The story initially originated as a screenplay that later turned into a book then a movie.

4. Forrest Gump 

Oscar-winning movie Forrest Gump comes as a surprise to many who didn’t know it was based on the book that made it to the New York Times bestseller that was written by author Winston Groom. Although quite different from the book, the movie managed to make a successful release.

5. Cloudy with a chance of meatballs

Although inspired by the book version written by Ron and Judy Barrett, the animated movie is actually quite different from the book. While the book is based on a grandfather telling bedtime stories about food falling from the sky, the animation film involves a smart discoverer who builds a machine that makes the food fall from the sky instead.

6.Shrek

Another surprising animated film that no one could have guessed had a book inspired by it. Author William Steig based his book on an ugly looking ogre who accidentally saves a princess and DreamWorks Pictures did a pretty good job recreating the book, winning the first Academy Award for the best-animated feature.

7. Planet of the apes

The popular movie was based on the classic sci-fi novel that was written by Pierre Boulle. The book version had originally been published in France in 1963 in French and due to its popularity, it was later translated into English within the same year.

8. The Shawshank Redemption 

The 1994 classic hit film was produced after the short novella by Stephen King. His collection called Different Seasons has four novellas in it from which Shawshank redemption was taken from one.

9. The help

The popular movie featuring Emma Stone and Viola Davis were inspired by the novel written by Kathryn Stockett.

10. Die Hard 

The movie Die Hard starring Bruce Willis was based on the book called Nothing Lasts Forever by New York Times bestselling author Roderick Thorp. The book Is actually a sequel to The Detective.
